A woman recently told the story about how she sat down to write thank you cards after a series of job interviews… and she could barely write. She says she can’t even remember the last time she wrote something down on paper instead of shooting off in an email or typing it in a document. It’s insane how much of our time is spent online, but putting pen to paper is still very important. One reason you still need to write is to send notes of appreciation to interviewers for positions you have interviewed for.

It can be easy to get carried away on thank you cards for potential employers, but there is no reason to rewrite your resume on the card. Try to stick to a few points. The first point is that you are grateful they took the time to interview you. You are grateful! It is getting you that much closer to a job. Let them know you are happy you had the chance to talk and express your interest and suitability for the position.

The great thing about thank you cards for interviews is that you can take the opportunity to clarify or explain anything that you felt wasn’t laid out properly in an interview. Bring up a funny anecdote that the interviewer told or mention that you did look at that competitor’s website that they mentioned. It shows that you have a good memory and can help them remember your interview as well. Often companies will interview several people for a job, so making them remember you or recall you later is a great way to stick out.

Finally, scrap all of these rules if you have good intuition and feel like you understand the interviewer’s tastes and needs. If the interviewer likes details and plenty of information, then give him a longer card reiterating all of the skills you have and what you would do for the company. If the interviewer was lighthearted and looking for someone that fit the personality of the company, then let yours out in the card. Good luck!

Jane grew up in the Midwest and lived a traditional lifestyle – a mom, dad and two brothers, a dog in the backyard and kids playing in the front. Every day she’d take a packed lunchbox to school, and tucked within would be personalized notes from her mother. She’d save the notes, but not out of sentimentality. Jane would come home, empty the lunchbox and set the notes aside in a side drawer.

After eating lunchbox food for nine years, Jane entered high school and left the lunchbox and personalized notes behind. The notes lingered in a drawer, eventually navigating up to her cedar chest along with old valentines and saved corsages from school dances. She left for college, moved out west and started her own life. When it came time to settle in her new house with her own family, she brought the cedar chest with her and started to review its contents.

Those personalized notes from her mother came as a shock to Jane. She finally sat down to reread them all – nine years’ worth. Many of the notes were simple – an “I love you,” or a reminder to enjoy the day. But some of them were insights in to her life growing up. One note told her how proud her mom was of her performance at a piano recital. Another told a story about her mom watching from a distance as Jane took care of a younger nerdy neighborhood girl. Memories from her childhood that she didn’t know existed came flooding back.
What really struck Jane was that her mom took the time to write a note every single day, even though Jane can never remember remarking on them. Day in and day out, her mom reminded her of her love, and day in and day out Jane failed to realize this as a kid. The most remarkable thing is that those daily notes, meant to be tossed aside in order to get to the sandwich and pudding, were inexplicably saved, a physical reminder of her mother’s love.

Jane framed many of the little notes, placing them throughout her new child’s nursery. She said it would be a perfect reminder of her own mother’s presence the child’s life. It was also a reminder to herself that even when you think your child is not paying attention, all those displays of motherly love do make a difference some day.

But what should you look out for when selecting which printing company to entrust with your company stationery?

First of all the term business stationery can include a lot of different items. So let’s just define the kind of printing we are talking about here. Potentially these are the sort of items we mean.

What is your average print run of letterhead, compliments slips, etc?

This is the leading question you should pose to any printers you approach to ask for a commercial stationery print quote. But it is of course the first question that you should also ask yourself. Exactly what is your need? Is it for 1,000 or 100,000 letterhead or more?

If you are clear about your own requirements then you will find it much easier to request a relevant quote.

Right, now approach the corporate stationery printers and ask them what their usual print runs are. Some printers are best set up to produce low quantity print runs of stationery. This is usually based on the capabilities of their particular printing presses.

If you are in need of say 250,000 letterheads then you will typically find that your high street or small family firm of printers in unlikely to have the print machinery available to produce what you require.But there is a very simple way to get to the bottom of this, and yet most people in charge of ordering their company bulk stationery fail to ask the question. Simple approach your prospective printer and ask them what kind of print runs constitute normal for them?

By the way, there is a caveat to the advice above.

Corporate stationery printing comes in more than one flavour. If you look at your own company stationery you will be aware that it is printed in a number of different colours. These will typically consist of 1, 2 or 3 Pantone spot colours. And if the number of colours exceed three then the chances are that your stationery is printed in 4 colour, which is also somewhat confusingly known as full and/or process colour printing.

So be sure to ask about average commercial stationery print runs, but add in the question about whether this is in spot or process colour. If nothing else, the printing company producing your stationery quote will suddenly be aware that you are someone who knows what they are talking about!

For a bridal shower that’s held during the day at someone’s house could have quite casual bridal shower thank you wording. Something such as “Thanks for attending my bridal shower and helping me celebrate the big day!” would be appropriate. For a lingerie bridal shower, the lingerie bridal shower thank you cards should say something fun. “I can’t wait to knock Robert’s socks off with your lovely present that I am so grateful for!” could be something written on a lingerie bridal shower thank you card. 

The wedding thank you cards should also reflect the tone of the wedding. For formal weddings, you may want to include “You’re generous gift will be of great help to us as we start our lives together.” But for a more informal wedding thank you card you may want to make it very personal such as, “We loved the dinnerware that you gave us! We can’t wait to use it!” 

Whatever event you’re sending wedding thank you cards for, it should always keep with the tone of the event’s invitation or theme of the party.
